I came here at the end of summer with my husband and son for a seafood night - and wow what a phenomenal hole in the wall!! When you walk in, they have a variety of seafood on ice - we ordered a whole branzino (blackened), shrimp (with garlic and lemon), and calamari (fried), along with their rice and dips. We did not have a single bad bite!!! The food was so incredible and so fresh - you can tell the quality of the food was very high. I felt like I was in Europe! I removed a point because the bathroom was absolutely filthy and the wait staff was not the most attentive - I'd definitely come back for the food though, maybe takeout!
The seafood here is so fresh and the seasoning they use is delicious! The only reason I'm knocking off a star is because it can be quite pricey, but you do get what you pay for on quality. You start by going to the fresh seafood counter and picking out what you want and how you want it cooked. Then you get seated at one of their few tables since the space is pretty small and casual. Aside from the seafood, make sure you also order their Egyptian rice - it's so flavorful with seasonings. The food also came out so fast. My group of 5 was done eating within 45 min of sitting down!
Great seafood, simple and delicious! We loved the scallops. We got the shrimp, octopus, and whole fish, everything was amazing! We came on a Saturday around opening and there was no wait. Ordering is simple, you will pick the seafood type and how you want it cooked. We also got a salad and baba ganouj for some variety. Food came out quickly.
This place is truly an unique experience. When you walk in, you are directed to be seated at your spot but you have to go up to the front counter with fresh seafood on display to make your order. What you see is what is available for the day. The process can be confusing as the instructions aren't written anywhere and this place seems to always be busy. The seafood aren't labeled nor priced so you will have to ask the staff how much everything is when making decision on your selection. They also ask you how much as well and how you like it prepared. You better be prepared before going up to the counter because you can only put in your order once per table. (I think this is to encourage faster dining experience since their seating space can't accommodate many?). Food: 10/10 The food was amazing! The seafood tasted so fresh and was packed with flavor. We love the seasoning mix they used for the octopus. Our table saved it and used it to dipped the other seafood we ordered. I highly encourage coming with a group of 4 so you can try all the different seafood family style. We also got scallops, fried calamari, fish, seafood stew, shrimp and a side of hummus, rice, and eggplant. They also provide complimentary pita bread. It's a seafood paradise! Ambiance: 6/10 The seating areas were crowded and limited but that's because it's a small restaurant. However, I did not like how chaotic it felt seated inside as people are constantly getting up to place their order and the waiter was so busy delivering to multiple tables. I would recommend sitting outside for more peace if the weather is nice. Service: 6/10 This place was so busy during dinner time. It was difficult to get the waiter's attention at times. They also did not explain their menu well. We were constantly confused on what items are available to order as sides (the dips, rice, etc.) and how much or whether we would be charged for it or not. I don't like how not transparent this place is on their price. It would be so helpful if they created a brochure or menu describing their system. They probably have a high number of old and returning customers - but some descriptions would be nice for the new customers. The octopus was one of the best bite of octopus I had. Even with the chaotic dining experience, I still find this place worth making a trip just to eat here. We have been informing all our friends about this place and can't wait to come back again.
Is it worth the hype for the Egyptian flavors and experience? Absolutely. If you're looking for something fancy then this isn't it, but once your chance pick your seafood, there is a method to the madness. You can tell that the seafood is extra fresh and extremely flavorful. The service could be better to help you understand the menu and what to order because you can only decide and order once. Be prepared to wait in line.
Should have worn stretchy pants! A friend raved about this place and as my family and I love seafood, we decided to give this place a try. Its not a large establishment by any means but service is efficient. When you walk in, you are seated at your table. Once seated, you can head to the counter to order your fish - it seems very "Catch of the Day". you select your fish, how much you want, and have it cooked to order (deep fried, broiled, grilled, or Egyptian style), pick your sides and it will be delivered to your table once ready. We ordered broiled branzino, fried calamari, grilled shrimp, grilled octopus, greek salad and babganoush. Every single thing was absolutely delicious. So fresh and flavorful. We will absolutely come back to try the snapper!!!
Super fresh Egyptian seafood restaurant in Astoria! They don't have a menu- you just go up to the counter, choose the seafood and tell them how you want it cooked (fried, grilled, blackened). The price is based on weight. Very fair pricing. It's a small restaurant with outdoor seating. There was no wait on a weeknight. Would come back here for my next seafood craving!
I briefly saw someone post on their social media about this spot and I knew I had to come. I went with a couple of friends for a weekend afternoon lunch. The place was full but we managed to get indoor seats for a party of 4 immediately. Once you're seated, you order your seafood by weight and tell them how you want them cooked. You can only order seafood from the counter once, they don't let you go back up and reorder additional seafood. They don't give you a menu (you can look it up online prior to coming) to order sides. All the seafood was fresh, cooked PERFECTLY and sides were also very delicious. After getting home, we saw that their popular way to make the fish was blackened - we ordered it baked (it was still really good!). Def will be back!
What a great idea to visit this place. It's absolutely no frills but very efficient. So how it works is this - You go in and ask for a table (inside or outside). Tbh if you are wondering if inside will smell like fish, it surprisingly doesn't. After you are seated you go to the seafood "bar" and take your pick of the catch. They weigh the catch and make it how you want - fried, grilled etc. there are some "rules" like smaller fish is only fried, calamari min order is two etc. Everything is fresh and looks fresh too! Once you order you come back to your table and order a drink and sides. I mean I would not order the avocado salad for $16 again but it was pretty decent. We also got a couple of sodas and a side of brown rice (says Egyptian rice). Now let's get to the good stuff - we got the 1. Shrimp - fresh shrimp that is grilled in butter and garlic is one of my favorites and they did not disappoint. It was also off the shells so win win 2. Calamari - beautifully fried. Tip- ask for a hot sauce and they will bring this Jamaican ground pepper sauce thing that really elevates the fried squid 3. Octopus - You can't go wrong with fresh seafood. Came in a beautiful garlicky sauce thing - really well grilled, a tad charred just how I wanted 4. Mahi-mahi (it was a diff name but they said mahi mahi was a close enough translation) - nicely grilled again. The skin was charred and beautiful to eat. It was a nice juicy flaky fish, no complaints 5. Scallops - let me start by saying I am well aware of how hard making scallops perfect is. And they were spot on! Not a second more, not a second less Service is prompt! Everything is super clean provided they are dealing with raw seafood barely a few feet away - no smell, nothWill definitely go back and will probably try the some more stuff :)
I meeeaaan I don't know if they actually need another positive review but I feel so passionate about it that I MUST! I know there's the other place that's similar in Astoria but this was hands down way better IMO. Tastes fresh, the seasoning was perfect, the service was prompt, kind, informative. We sat outside which was perfect for me - people watch while people watch you devour amazing seafood. Definitely go here. It's a small space but we didn't need to wait midday on a weekday.
